A couple of announcements: This meet will be a
National Orienteering
Day event. We'll have give-away's throughout the morning to
celebrate.
A special treat for Orange Course runners -- the orange course
will be on the southern part of the Poplar Creek map (south of Golf
Road), which hasn't been used for this course recently.
REMOTE START for orange/green/red: Registration/check-in
will be at the shelter as usual, but red/green/orange runners will
walk a short distance (crossing Golf Road at the stop light) to
a remote start/finish area. After completing the course, they return
to the registration area to download ePunch results. We hope this
remote start allows these runners to enjoy the southern part of
the map without having to worry about crossing busy Golf Road "on-the-clock".
NOTE:
For 2010, cost of registering the day of the event has increased (see rates above).
If you pre-register online, the price is the same as last year. Plus,
you'll get a pre-marked map. Pre-registration will open for an event
a few days after the previous event is complete. Pre-registration will generally
close the Thursday before each event to allow time for printing the maps.
Details:
The Poplar Creek map, located in the western part of the 4,200-acre
Poplar Creek Forest Preserve in Hoffman Estates, features open woods,
gently rolling prairie, its namesake creek, and a variety of trails.
The topography is subtle with a few shallow reentrants, knolls and
depressions. Ruins of old buildings and fences are common in the
south and west sections of the map. At the northern edge of the
map, there is a small nature preserve containing pristine, undisturbed
prairie land, a rarity in Illinois.
We will be offering the standard white and yellow courses for beginners,
orange for intermediate, and red and green for advanced. E-Punch
will be used on orange, red, and green courses.
Directions:
Take the Northwest Tollway (I-90) 19 miles west of O'Hare to Exit
11—Sutton Road-South (Hwy 59); proceed south 1 mile then turn
right at forest preserve entrance. Follow the road .4 mile to the
shelter and parking areas located near the South-end of the road.
Public Transportation:
A great day to use a folding bike! The Metra train arrives in Bartlett
at 9:30 a.m. Jog/bike north on Oak Ave to Hwy 20. Jog left then
right and continue north on Bartlett Road; left on Bode Road; right
on Sutton Road for the last mile into parking lot on west side of
Sutton (6 miles from station) On the return, ask someone to drop
you back at the station.
