Details:
Plan a journey to the far northwest for our annual Night-O event
Saturday, August 28. We are returning once again to
Veteran Acres Park in Crystal Lake. We’ll be offering
both a short course (2.5 km) and a long course (5.4 km). The controls will all be marked with
reflective tape, making them easy to identify when a flashlight
beam crosses them.
We'll also have a special short trail-O with glow-in-the-dark trail markers. The course has been designed for for kids ages 4-14 (with parental supervision). The course will also be a
simple and fun way for adults to give night orienteering a try, without worrying about venturing
into the depths of the woods.
Be sure to bring plenty of bug repellant, as this area is very
popular with the mosquitoes. Long sleeves and pants would definitely
be in order as well. A word to the wise: the vegetation is very
lush this time of season, to put it nicely, and several of the indistinct
trails and paths are overgrown or indistinguishable, having had
no usage during the summer. Plan your route accordingly! We will
not be using the e-punch system for this event.
Of course, it goes without saying that each participant will need
to bring a headlamp or flashlight, with good batteries.
Also, we don't have an electronic version of this map, so we're probably not going to have courses pre-marked on maps. This will be an old-school meet, with participants copying courses from master maps. Be sure to allow extra time for this.
This event is included in Season Pass, so no additional registration is required for Season Pass holders.
Special Thanks:
CAOC is especially appreciative of the Crystal
Lake Park District and their staff. They are very helpful and
easy to work with!
