Details:
Finally, the long-awaited Night-O event is back! The event is again being held at Veteran Acres/Sterns Woods in the far northwest
suburb Crystal Lake. We will be offering a short, medium, and long course. The short course is an ideal night walk for younger participants and
new orienteerers looking for adventure. For the medium and long courses there is no need to fear thrashing through the middle of the forest
in the dark of night; this will focus on trail running and route choices.
This year we are featuring a new and improved orienteering map! The new map includes many trail and
vegetation updates, and new territory to the north and northeast has been opened up! We will also be presenting it at the 1:7500 scale. (Short course will be 1:5000.)
Come on out and give it a try -- let us know what you think! Pre-register or show up early for a pre-marked map.
Be sure and bring the proper equipment and clothing! We require that each participant bring a headlamp or flashlight with good batteries. Clothing suitable for
this time of year might include a light rain jacket -- be sure and check the latest weather forecast before heading out. For safety, it is advisable to bring an
emergency whistle. We will be using electronic punching, so bring your SI stick if you have one. If not, we are happy to loan you one for the event.
The controls for all courses will all be marked with reflective tape, making them easy to identify
when a flashlight beam crosses them. The courses will feature controls that are generally visible and
accessible from trails, although some of the trails may be indistinct!
This event is included in Season Pass, so no additional registration
is required for Season Pass holders.
Special Thanks:
CAOC is especially appreciative of the Crystal
Lake Park District and their staff. They are very helpful and
easy to work with!
