Details:
Silver Springs State Park is an exciting location for a Sprint
O and Night O event. The 1,400 acre park is located approximately
5 miles west of Yorkville in Kendall County. The park features open
woods, rolling hills along the Fox River, and large open prairie
areas. While this area may not present the technical and physical
challenges of some of our other maps, it does leave plenty of opportunity
for good family fun orienteering.
The Sprint O will consist of one course for all participants with
many short legs and multiple controls. The winning times should
range between 15 to 20 minutes. As part of the Night O, participants
will be presented with either a beginner, intermediate or advanced
course (the long course will involve a map exchange). Markers will
be made out of PVC pipe and reflective red and white tape. Participants
will be required to have a flashlight or headlamp to go out on the
course.
We will be using ePunch for this event (this is a recent change). Please bring along your ePunch sticks or rent them there. It is possible to participate using the traditional pin punch method, but your results will not be listed on the web site.
Directions:
Registration and start for the Sprint O and Night O will be at the
Kendall County Outdoor Education Center at 13689 Fox Road, Yorkville,
IL 60560 located within Silver Springs State Park. We recommend
that you take one of the two following routes to the park:
1) Take Interstate 55 west out of Chicago to the Plainfield exit
at highway 126. Travel west on highway 126 (15 miles) to highway
47. Go north on highway 47 to Fox Rd. (there is a stoplight and
a sign for Silver Springs State Park). Turn left on Fox Rd. and
travel west for 5 miles (don’t make the mistake of turning
into the Hoover Outdoor Education Center – you are looking
for the Kendall County Outdoor Education Center). Just beyond the
first entrance to Silver Springs State Park you will see a sign
for the Kendall County Outdoor Education Center. We will post orienteering
signs along Fox Rd. at the entrance to the event center.
2) Take interstate 290 out of Chicago west to interstate 88. Continue
west on interstate 88 until you reach highway 56 at the Sugar Grove
exit (if you miss this exit you cannot turn around until DeKalb
25 miles down the interstate). Take highway 56 until it intersects
with highway 47, turn right, and travel south on highway 47 for
approximately 15 miles to Yorkville. Once you cross over the Fox
River look for Fox Rd. (It is the second stoplight south of the
Fox River). Turn right on Fox Rd. and travel west for 5 miles (don’t
make the mistake of turning into the Hoover Outdoor Education Center
– you are looking for the Kendall County Outdoor Education
Center). Just beyond the first entrance to Silver Springs State
Park you will see a sign for the Kendall County Outdoor Education
Center. We will post orienteering signs along Fox Rd. at the entrance
to the event center.
