Model Event
Willow Springs Woods
Friday, October 19 - 2pm - 6pm
A Model event will be held on Friday on
the Willow Springs Woods map. This is an area which is contiguous
with the Country Lane Woods map to the south, site of Sunday's Long
competition. Model event maps of Willow Springs will be available
in the parking lot for $5. Selected features will be flagged to
give orienteers a taste of our midwestern terrain, and participants
will be invited to mark these features from a master map. No times
will be kept and no punches will be placed with the controls.
Orienteers should restrict themselves to the Willow Springs map;
the area south of 95th St is Country Lane Woods, and is EMBARGOED
until Sunday's
competition. Therefore any competitor found south of 95th St is
subject to disqualification.
Directions to Model Event:
To get to the Model Event from O'Hare airport, follow signs
toward Chicago onto the Kennedy Expressway (I-190) and soon
thereafter take the Tri-state Tollway - South (I-294) toward
Indiana for approximately 22 miles to exit at 95th Street.
Go west on 95th St approximately 3.5 miles to turn right at
Flavin Road. Proceed north on Flavin Road about 800 meters,
to make a quick right turn into forest preserve parking lot.
Caution: You will be coming downhill in fast traffic just
as the side road appears. We will be selling maps in the shelter.
To get to the Meet Headquarters and
Packet Pickup at LaQuinta Inn afterward, turn right from the
parking area, back onto Flavin Road, heading north. Turn left
at next traffic light (Archer Avenue) and proceed southwest
about 4 miles to turn right (north) on Kingery Hwy (Rt 83).
Proceed north approximately 3.5 miles to exit right onto frontage
road at light, just after crossing I-55. As you cross I-55,
note LaQuinta Inn to your right, on NE corner of the intersection.
Return back south on frontage road to LaQuinta parking lot.
To get to Model Event from LaQuinta Inn, reverse these directions.
Be careful turning onto Flavin Road from Archer Avenue: Signs
at the intersection may be confusing since Flavin Road north
of Archer becomes Willow Springs Road, so signs bearing both
road names are sprinkled around the intersection. And once
on Flavin, the left turn into forest preserve parking comes
up quickly, as you're rounding an uphill turn in heavy traffic.
So suggest activating your left-turn blinker immediately after
turning off Archer.
